Wow is all I can say about today at cub scout camp of June 2006 Kansas City MO. I took today off of work to spend the day with my son having fun with archery, BB Gun's and tons of other things for the boys to learn and have fun. I must of taken about 500 or more pictures of Cub Scouts having a blast. These Cubs really had a great day considering the heat but really to come to think about it the kids had no idea how hot it was they just kept kicking strong with every session they completed.
The Start of the Day. Our first session today was Cub Scout compass course. We learned how to count paces and learn how to navigate when hiking and other cool events but it was cool learning our directions and figuring out that some cub scouts are shorter than the others and they will always have a different pace count than a taller scout.
Next we went for lunch and the kids had a blast with only getting 20 minutes to eat and rest we didn’t have much chance to do much other than fill up the water bottles and get the boys in the shade.
Then we went and played some kickball with another Cub Scout pack. It was a great game the boys all got a chance to kick the ball into the kickball field away from camp.
At this point the kids were starting to feel the heat we soaked them with the next event starting out everyone was playing regular volleyball and then it got wet we had pails of water and big yellow sponges and the cub scouts all got soaked with the other team member trying to hit another cub scout in the other pack to get them soaked and of course the sidelines one of Pack 393 Leaders went to soak her son who was a cub scout camp staff member helping other packs have fun at their first experiences of what camp is all about and what to expect when they move from cub scouting to Boy Scouts.
We had some great den chief's out with us and of course we had Shawn who was so cool with the boys and such a big help with pictures to prove how tired this scout was from helping maintain all the cubs and not get soaked since they all went the Cub Scout camp trading post and got squart bottles with an unlimited water supply "Their water bottles" an endless water source.
The kids all got soaked, however one scout stood out as the most soaked as we could hear his shoes going "squish, squish" this was Josh P and of course I got a few pictures of that moment.
After this we when and relaxed back at camp for a little while until we heard the ice cooler open and one of the other den leaders started passing out root beer small can soda and said now its time for the burping contest you should have seen the kids faces when they now can burp like they never burped before without getting in-trouble with "MOM" .... LOL ya we had some great awards for the boys, we also had the 2006 Pack 393 Burping Champion.
Cub Scout Activity "Bead Snakes" Next we headed out away from camp again to make a snake out of beads and a string. The Cub Scouts really had fun with this activity as they started out rough but really got the hang of building the bead snakes. Every scout completed one on his own with little support.
First Aid Activity "Basic Safety & Stretcher Emergency Cub Training" The start of this event was cool, the camp trainer opened the activity with how many of you cubs have never needed a bandage? Well sure enough all the kids didn’t raise there hands. Then the camp trainer started to teach the kids when and how to use a bandage and to properly clean the cut and keep it clean for proper healing.
After we got the basics of first aid we all got to take turns being the person to get carried out in a stretcher. All the cub scouts joined together by holding each part of the stretcher and not dropping the injured Cub Scout. The kids had a great time and we loved watching on the sidelines grabbing the stretcher to keep the strength of the pack coming together to learn a very important skill and that is team player involvement.
And then we ate with the pack family and got ready for the closing of camp for the day. Pack 393 Kansas City, MO got the opportunity to help with retiring a flag ceremony and the boys did great.
It was a great day off for me, no meetings just time to spend with my son and his friends.
